More info

Because young elephants stay with the herd for so long, they can often be seen in groups like this. Elephants are dependent on their mothers’ milk for 3-4 years which is why it is so devastating when mothers are taken by poachers, leaving not just one casualty but two or three. An elephant is murdered every 25 minutes by poachers who hack off their tusks and sell them on the black market.

This means that in the time it took me to complete this painting 385 elephants have died. For this reason 25% of the proceeds of this painting will be donated to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues and raises the babies left orphaned by poachers.
